Canada: High Above the Niagara Falls

September 4, 2019

I stood at the top of a tall outpost, overlooking the Niagara Falls. The gate opened, and as I dangled in my “seat” made of sturdy fabric, I felt the knot in my stomach growing. It was… a lot higher than it had seemed from the ground… not to mention the fact that our path was one high above the water.

As I tightened my grip on the straps, I slid forward, and the outpost disappeared from under my feet. Fear snaked up my stomach until… bliss. It was so beautiful! The wind was absolutely refreshing, the ride relaxingly smooth, and the view was fantastic. Far too soon, we reached the end. Ziplining above the Niagara Falls – officially checked off my bucket list!

While Canada hadn’t been a part of our original road trip plan… it had been close enough that we decided it was worth the drive. Our beautiful Airbnb was not only extremely affordable but a 15-minute walk from the Niagara Falls – perfect to enjoy the last few days of vacation.

It wasn’t my first time seeing the Niagara Falls – our family had come previously but had stayed on the U.S. side.

For the sheer experience, we decided to embark on the cruise ship, sporting the Canadian red rain poncho in contrast with the bright blue on the U.S. side.

The closer we came to the famous Horseshoe Falls, it was like being in the middle of a rainstorm. Thick, thick mist blurred my eyes until it was a sheen of gray all around me. The sound was also incredible – the impressive sound of the falls drowned out anything else, until the world around me sheer water and mist.

As our cruise boat passed by the U.S. one, we all waved – it was so strange to be on the other side! The rocks dotting the smaller waterfall on the U.S. border made the view beautifully wild.

When we emerged from the cruise, we were soaked. Dripping water all around us, soaked. If not for the handy hood on the rain poncho, I would’ve looked like a drowned rat.

After a short break at our Airbnb, we came back down to Niagara Falls, hurrying to catch the fireworks. But, to my dismay, the summer fireworks season had just ended.

In its stead, there was a breathtaking light show that decorated the falls with bright colors. It was a peaceful, beautiful, and worthy conclusion to our road trip!
